Sketch breaks through for maiden win at Caulfield

It may not be the family’s biggest Caulfield triumph, but the Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Sketch made her mark with a maiden victory in Wednesday’s Sportsbet Jockey Watch Plate.

The daughter of Brazen Beau, a half-sister to Blue Diamond winner Daumier, claimed the 1600m event for three-year-olds with Craig Williams aboard.

“The bigger picture is breeding, so that’s a great way to win her maiden by having a city win for her as well,” Williams said.

Sketch, a $1.65 favourite, settled behind the speed before Williams angled her clear turning for home, finishing strongly to defeat Icaro by three-quarters of a length, with Sky Deel third.

It was her first win from five starts, having shown promise with placings at Kilmore and Ballarat earlier this campaign after transferring from James Cummings’ stable.

“She had the nice run… she was solid through the line,” Williams said.

“She had no problem today settling out to the mile.”
