Somethings Burnin’ seeks redemption at Flemington

Champion trainer Chris Waller possesses a remarkable stable of high-quality colts.

While four of Waller’s colts are set for the Run To The Rose at Rosehill this Saturday, his three-year-old colt contingent at Flemington is split between the Poseidon Stakes (1100m) and the Michael Moroney (1400m).

Somethings Burnin’ is slated to compete in the latter, a race trainer Waller believes could serve as a stepping stone to the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 10.

The colt previously secured a maiden victory at Sandown over 1200m when first-up on August 19, before facing a field of five and being narrowly defeated at the same track on September 2.

Waller expressed his disappointment with Somethings Burnin’s performance at his most recent outing.

“Blake (Shinn) said he was a bit keen and thought he would take him down behind the other runners and it might shut him down a touch,” Waller said.

“If he stayed out behind the other runners, he might have got a bit free and as soon as he got down there, he was snookered.

“He was travelling a bit too well to come back behind the heels and come around.

“It wasn’t easy watching it, but when he explained it to me, I was comfortable.”

The Michael Moroney Stakes has a history of producing Caulfield Guineas winners, with Griff achieving the feat in 2024. Waller indicated that he wouldn’t discount Somethings Burnin’ from contesting the prestigious stallion-making race next month.

“He could be,” Waller stated.

“I was thinking he didn’t have too hard a run last time, so he can back up here on the nice big track, whereas he could go to Caulfield and have another bad luck story.”

Godolphin’s colt Diameter will join Somethings Burnin’ on Saturday. Diameter is second-up after securing a third-place finish over 1300m at Rosehill last month.

Ben Melham will ride Somethings Burnin’, with Sydney-based Jason Collett partnering Diameter.
