South Australian trainers Dan Clarken and Oopy Macgillivray have not ruled out The Map making another Melbourne Cup bid.
The Map’s victory in the Listed Andrew Ramsden (2800m) at Flemington last year secured her spot in the Melbourne Cup, where she finished 21st behind Knight’s Choice.
While The Map won’t race in the Andrew Ramsden this Saturday, 28 horses have entered for a chance at the elusive ballot exemption into this year’s Cup.
After two runs in February, The Map didn’t meet expectations, leading to her being sold at the Chairman’s Sale in Sydney. However, she was passed in for failing to meet her $200,000 reserve.
“We gave her the opportunity to become a broodmare, and someone might have come along and offered $300,000 or $400,000 for her,” Clarken said.
“The training partners were impressed by her at the sale, believing she still had racehorse potential.
“She’s come back after a good spell and is ready to race on,” Clarken added.
“Who knows, she might be another Melbourne Cup contender.”
