Perth horses life-changing for John Leek Jr

There is no shortage of excitement and enthusiasm surrounding John Leek Jr and his stable.

The Pakenham trainer says he can’t help but be thrilled after he was sent a further group of star hores by Perth’s leading owner, Bob Peters.

By his own admission in the latter stages of his training career, Leek Jr has been rejuvenated with an influx of star power and he’s daring to dream big.

Peters transferred Zaratite and Picture Perfect to Leek Jr last month, but the addition of Group 1 champions Regal Power and Western Empire is an unanticipated boost and one that he’s desperately keen to maximise.

Regal Power and Western Empire were stars at Ascot last year after taking out the Kingston Town Classic and Railway Stakes respectively, but came home after being well beaten in two Melbourne spring carnival events for trainer, Danny O’Brien.

Leek Jr said linking up with Peters is life-changing.

“I’ve had a few changes in my life, but this opportunity is quite amazing,” Leek Jr told Melbourne’s RSN.

“They are serious, serious horses and to be honest, Bob Peters has changed our lives at the moment.

“I’ve had good horses over the years, but nothing to this type of quality, these horses are just amazing.

“It’s probably the most excited I’ve ever been in my life in racing.

“It will be interesting to see what they do because they have serious, serious ability.”

Leek Jr said Western Empire and Regal Power will be aimed at Melbourne’s autumn carnival next year.

The All Star Mile, a race Regal Power won two years ago and The Australian Cup are chief targets.

“Bob loves making a plan for his horses,” Leek Jr said.

“He’s had success over the years and you have to take your hat off to a guy who has done that.

“We chat nearly on a daily basis and I keep him informed on every horse, he feels like he’s in the stable with us.

“I’ve basically moved every other horse I’ve got except Fengarada, which I’ll personally look after.

“I don’t want any horse to interfere with what I’m doing with his horses.

“I’ve got the time to do it and hopefully it’s going to be a great next 12-months.

“I’m still pinching myself to get these horses in my stables.”

Fengarada has won four of five races this campaign for Leek Jr, including the Moe Cup (2050m) on October 14.

Bright Diamond, Secret Plan, Frigid and Truly Blessed are the other Peters-owned horses that have transferred to Leek Jr.
