Phillip Stokes concedes Stretan Angel can be a tricky horse to manage.
But he’s confident the mare is primed for a strong showing in the $1 million The Meteorite at Cranbourne on Saturday.
Now in its second year, The Meteorite (1200m) is a Southside Racing slot race staged on Cranbourne Cup day, with The Supernova (1400m) held during Pakenham Cup week.
A three-time Group 1 placegetter, Stretan Angel snapped a long drought when winning the Listed Alinghi Stakes (1100m) before a flat effort in the Group 3 Kirin Ichiban Sprint (1100m).
Stokes says she has bounced through that run, acknowledging her form can fluctuate.
“She’s been like that for the last two years,” Stokes said.
“We gave her some fast work Saturday morning and everything says she’s going as good as ever.”
He opted against the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) in favour of the lucrative prize on offer.
“It’s worth a lot of money … we’ll chase the money,” he said.
Stokes hopes a fast tempo and clear running will help.
“Good speed. Good speed and clear room – that’s what she needs.”
Stretan Angel is a $13 chance, with Zou Sensation favourite at $4.50.
