Stokes says Deakin peaking perfectly for Caulfield Cup

For trainer Phillip Stokes, everything has gone to plan with his Caulfield Cup contender Deakin, whose campaign was carefully mapped out after his Flemington win in March.

That victory in the Roy Higgins Quality earned Deakin a ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup (3200m), though Stokes admits the 2400m trip of Saturday’s race looks more suitable.

Deakin tuned up for the Cup with a solid sixth behind Sir Delius in the Turnbull Stakes (2000m), following earlier runs over 1400m and 1700m. A 1200m jump-out at Pakenham in between also helped sharpen him up.

“The horse is flying,” Stokes said. “His last run was spot on. He needs that extra 400 metres now. I’m really happy with him.”

Stokes believes Deakin’s handy draw and improving fitness will see him competitive. “It’s all going to plan and he’s peaking at the right time,” he said.
