Stretan Angel’s Moonee Valley gallop to determine Group 1 run

A morning gallop at Moonee Valley will decide if Stretan Angel contests the William Reid Stakes (1200m) on Saturday.

Trainer Phillip Stokes and jockey Lachlan Neindorf will assess the mare after her gallop at the track on Tuesday. Stretan Angel, a daughter of Harry Angel, has not raced at Moonee Valley before, raising concerns for Stokes about how she’ll handle the course.

The mare has been impressive at Flemington, finishing second in the Lightning Stakes (1000m) and third in the Newmarket Handicap in her past two Group 1 runs.

Stokes ruled out a trip to Sydney for the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) after an unplaced run in last year’s Silver Eagle (1300m) at Randwick.

Stokes is optimistic about Stretan Angel’s current form but will be guided by Neindorf’s assessment before confirming her start on Saturday. If she runs, the mare could target the Sangster Stakes (1200m) and The Goodwood (1200m) in Adelaide later in the campaign.
