Super Ex continues development at Doomben

Super Ex ramps up his bid to star at the Magic Millions carnival when the promising colt adds Doomben to his racing portfolio.

The three-year-old will race for the first time since September when trainer Mark Newnham saddles him up for Saturday’s Gold Edition Plate, the first of two lead-up races before the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) on January 13.

Super Ex has won his past three starts and Newnham is confident he can make a stylish comeback.

“He’s always shown above average ability. He’s just a good foolproof horse with a versatile racing style,” Newnham said.

Super Ex has only experienced defeat once, when third on debut at Newcastle.

He then won twice over 1200 metres at Kembla Grange and Canterbury before progressing to Saturday metropolitan grade with success at Randwick in a Benchmark 75 Handicap (1300m).

“He’s pretty durable. He’s got a good constitution and a good attitude for it,” Newnham said.

Super Ex is one of four Sydney-trained runners in the Gold Edition Plate.

Bjorn Baker takes Goodfella north for the first time since the colt was fourth in this year’s $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott are represented by filly Debonairly while Greg Hickman has the favourite Pierata aiming for his third win from six starts.
