Sweet Ruby up to the task at Gosford

The two-year-old has finished in the placings in all three starts in her career but faces tougher opposition at Gosford’s The Coast raceday.

A daughter of Rubick, Sweet Ruby broke her maiden two starts ago at Muswellbrook before placing behind Baby Wong last start, who had run second in Group 3 company earlier in his prep.

Kim Waugh believes that the two-year-old has the ability to race in black type races in her upcoming seasons.

“She’s definitely shown really good ability and I think if she keeps improving like she has been, then for sure (she can go on to bigger races),” she said.

“I think she’s a good filly. She’s still very green and new.

“She does still run about a bit and look around a bit. I’m really happy with the way she’s going. I think she’s very raw still and she’s still got a bit of maturing to do as well.

“She’s doing this on raw ability at the moment. I like her a lot.”

Sweet Ruby is a full sibling to another horse under Waugh’s care, by the name of Erno.

Erno is a winner of three races from his eight starts and contested the inaugural Bondi Stakes (1600m).

The now four-year-old hasn’t been seen since racing in the $1 million feature in 2019, suffering from injury after the race.

“He’s had a bad tendon injury, so he’s just come back into work now doing some pre-training,” Waugh said.

“He’s had a fair bit of time, he scanned up really well, so fingers crossed with him.

“They (Sweet Ruby and Erno) don’t really look alike I’ve got to be honest. They’re similar in funny little habits and things like that, and they’re both really nice horses and very sensible.”

One of Waugh’s stable stars, Trumbull, hasn’t been seen since a disappointing eight in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m).

Waugh said Trumbull was sent for a b after falling ill.

“He’s fine, about a week later he ended up with a bit of a virus, so he went back out to the paddock. He came back in this week,” she said.

“He’s only been back in work for two days, so we haven’t sat down and made a plan (for his next preparaton) yet.”
