Australian Oaks Free Tips, Bets and Field Preview – 2020

The Australian Oaks makes up one of four Group 1’s at Royal Randwick this Saturday as champion trainer Chris Waller looks to claim a three-peat.

Verry Elleegant won this race last year by nearly two lengths and there are a handful of very talented fillies looking to follow in her footsteps. This is shaping up to be a wide-open betting race, so be sure to view all of our top tips below.

Australian Oaks – Winner

No. 1 Probabeel – Bet Now: $4.00

Probabeel has drawn barrier 12 for the Oaks and looks poised to swoop in late just like she did in the Vinery a fortnight ago. The Savabeel filly ran the fastest sectionals over the last 600m of the race and I think if she drew clear of Funstar a little earlier, she probably would have beaten Shout The Bar at the line.

Jockey Opie Bosson is back in the saddle – good news considering he’s won his last three starts aboard the three-year-old. Bosson has five Group 1’s to his name already this year including a win in the Australian Derby last week, so with Probabeel likely off to the paddock after this, it’s worth riding the hot hand.

Australian Oaks – 2nd

No. 9 Quintessa – Bet Now: $21.00

Nash Rawiller has jumped off Nudge and will instead saddle Quintessa in the Oaks. Rachel King was forced to go forward at the turn in the Adrian Knox last week, and despite being run down by Colette and Toffee Tongue, I still thought she did well to hold on for third. The lightly-raced filly has placed in four of her seven starts so far and should enjoy a much more comfortable run from barrier 5.

Australian Oaks – 3rd

No. 7 Toffee Tongue – Bet Now: $14.00

Toffee Tongue handled the wet track beautifully last week finishing second in the Adrian Knox, so I have to include her again with rain forecast for later in the week. Kerrin McEvoy has never won the Oaks before, but history is on his side with trainer Chris Waller having won the last two editions. Like last week, she’s drawn barrier 2 again and maps to sit somewhere off midfield before challenging late along the rails.

Australian Oaks – 4th

No. 4 Colette – Bet Now: $3.10

The Godolphin filly is flying right now and looks even tougher to fault this time around. She probably could have won the Adrian Knox by more if she wasn’t held up coming into the straight, but still maps to have a very similar run from an identical gate. Glen Boss has won the Oaks twice before and will get his first look at Colette on Saturday. She seemed to have plenty left in the tank last week even after winning by 2.8 lengths, so if the pair can break clear towards the inside, a fourth consecutive win isn’t out of the question.

Australian Oaks Suggested Bets
