Race 1             No.2    ROOSEVELT

Race 8             No.7    BASTIA

Race 1

2 – 6 – 1 – 8

I’m looking to get off with a flyer as my best bet of the day is ROOSEVELT in the first. His debut winning performance back in March was solid and it’s hard to knock either of his two trials where he seems to travel and can quick when given an inch of rein. The speed looks solid here and I think he can stalk them and blow them away. River Bird comes through two solid races finishing behind Golden Slipper winner Estijaab and Fiesta and comes here following a three month break. Gem Song was strong winning on debut and although a tougher ask here he has to be respected. Green has only trialled once publically and it was a nice hit out so watch betting on her.

Race 2

2 – 1 – 3 – 5

James Cummings’ and Godolphin dominate here with the top two picks Intuition and my top selection REGIMEN who has drawn the coveted inside barrier. Regimen returns here after having no luck at all at Caulfield when caught wide throughout as well as pulling up with an irregular heart rhythm. I am putting a line straight through that run and going on her solid efforts prior when fourth at Caulfield and second at Flemington in the Moomba Plate. Intuition is first up for 105 days with one solid barrier trial and from gate two he should be able to stalk the leading bunch and be able to utilise his turn of speed. Whichever one has the best luck I am confident will win.

Race 3

2 – 3 – 7 – 4

Keen to bet here as I think either MEROVEE or Primitivo will get the cash having had blinkers added to their gear and the only reason I’ve settled on the former is that he is a longer price. Merovee has been freshened with a 66 day break following two solid runs this campaign but Waller has kept him up to the mark with two barrier trials the latest a winning effort at Canterbury. Primitivo is dropping back in grade and distance with both being positives and as long as the tempo is fair he will be charging at the line. He is still yet to win a race but he does look as though he will win his fair share and is capable of progressing to play a role in the Brisbane winter feature races if he can get the job done here.

Race 4

2 – 7 – 8 – 1

I reckon at the odds the value lays with the mare O’RACHEL from the Chris Waller stable who is first up for three months and although 1100m is short of her best she has the class on a few of these and is sure to be charging hard late. Zonk the favourite could take the race by the horns and kick up from the inside gate and go straight to the front and if allowed to have a stroll in the park will take some beating. Epidemic looks a winning chance coming off a nice barrier trial two weeks ago to have her ready for this assignment.

Race 5

13 – 8 – 4 – 3

Looks another open TAB Highway but I’ve settled on the bottom one with the successful combination of trainer Rodney Northam and champion hoop Robert Thompson with VALREE. The mare won two on the trot in good fashion before having no luck when finding the line hard when fourth behind Laussel who goes pretty well and finished in the numbers on Wednesday at Canterbury behind Seaway. Northern River was good last start at Randwick over 1200m and should appreciate the extra trip here and with the claim for Patrick Scorse she looks a player. Volpe is honest and has run well in a few TAB Highway races previously and looks capable of playing a role while Sugar Dance has been freshened up and looked good in a recent barrier trial.

Race 6

2 – 7 – 4 – 3

The feature race of the afternoon and there looks three winning chances with the fav Nettoyer, the Chris Waller trained Alward and my top pick and likely leader ECUADOR. Nettoyer is a quality mare destined to win some group races and this race looks an ideal stepping stone to some riches in Brisbane. She only needs to repeat her last start second and she will be in the finish. Alward has been freshened since running in the Chairman’s 2600m which I am sure was a distance too far for him and he is far better suited at the 2000m. His worry is can overcome a wide gate and probably giving the others a start at the top of the straight. I am convinced the others will have their work cut out trying to run down Ecuador who is third up so he should be cherry ripe fitness wise and the step to 200m is just ideal. He is giving his main dangers weight but he is one tough horse and will make them work hard to run him down.

Race 7

4 – 7 – 1 – 5

SPECIAL MISSILE is now ready to run a hard 1350m race and keep running having had three runs this preparation. Importantly for him Peacock has drawn outside him so I expect Special Missile to find the paint and seeing as he is tough expect the others to be chasing from a long way out. The favourite Serene Miss is looking for four wins on the trot and was ultra impressive rounding up her provincial counterparts in The Championships last time out. She has a very good turn of speed so the tempo of race will determine how quickly she can dash. The interesting runner is Tougherthantherest who has built a handy record albeit around the Canberra and Wagga region when trained by Keith Dryden and Scott Collings. Now with Chris Waller gives you the impression the raps are pretty good on the son of Street Boss.

Race 8

7 – 8 – 9 – 2

This looks an ideal race for BASTIA as he steps up in distance and I think finds only a mediocre Saturday benchmark 80 event. Kris Lees has gone back to the three week weeks between races which has proven successful previously. If Bastia doesn’t win I think it will be Solo Mission who is the query having not raced in Australia and races for the first time since being gelded. Awoke was pretty solid first up when hitting the line hard on the Kensington track over 1350m so the extra distance here should suit her. Arancini only needs to repeat his run behind Veladero three weeks ago to be amongst the spoils here.

Race 9

6 – 13 – 7 – 5

BON AMIS is fourth up and finds a nice race but the biggest plus is the three week freshen and back to a distance that suits him far better than his recent runs over 1400m. The promising gelding hasn’t won past 1100m but at his only start at 1200m he didn’t have the best of luck when a solid ninth beaten only 2.8 lengths. He should find a nice spot reasonably handy and be hard to hold out. I Am Serious is first up having trialled nicely at Canterbury recently. From gate one she must be thought of as a major player especially if she gets the chance to wind up.
