The Group 1 South Australian Derby was first run in 1860 and has been won by notable horses such as Gatum Gatum (1961), Subzero (1992), Mummify (2003), Rebel Raider (2009) and Russian Camelot last year.
Rebel Raider was the last horse to win the Victoria Derby/South Australian Derby double and Delicacy is the last filly to win the race in 2015.

South Australian Derby – Winner
No. 2 Royal Mile – Bet Now: $11.00
Royal Mile has done little wrong during his short racing career and he comes into this Group 1 race on the back of four wins on the trot.
History would suggests he has taken the right path to South Australian Derby glory with four of the past six winners coming through the Chairman’s Stakes, a race in which he won last start.
All four of those winners also came through the Port Adelaide Guineas. Another race in which Royal Mile won.
He showed his versatility in both those races when he came from back in the pack to win the Guineas and then led them around the turn in the Chairman’s.
He is a horse that will be rock hard fit, is in winning form and the $13 currently available is very juicy each way odds.
South Australian Derby – 2nd
No. 6 Deep Strike – Bet Now: $8.00
Deep Strike earned himself a crack in black type racing with back to back wins at Pakenham and Sandown leading into his last start in the Chairman’s Stakes at Morphettville.
He was very well backed that day and jumped $2.70 but nothing went right for the horse late in the race.
Michael Dee found a whole heap of trouble at a vital stage in the race and the horse lost all momentum to finish eighth.
He has been sacked and Damien Lane will now steer from barrier eight.
The son of Tavistock is bred to stay and he is only a lightly raced horse so he will take plenty of improvement out of his last run.
South Australian Derby – 3rd
No. 4 Let’s Karaka Deel – Bet Now: $14.00
Let’s Karaka Deel was runner up in the Mornington Guineas over 1600m first up before he again finished second behind Royal Mile in the Port Adelaide Guineas over 1700m.
The son of Dundeel is another who will only get better as he gets out in distance and will be ready to peak at his third run this prep.
Barrier 15 is tricky but he is right in this race.
South Australian Derby – 4th
No. 3 Liqueuro – Bet Now: $5.00
Liqueuro has managed four wins from five career race starts to date including his last two in a row.
He showed just how tough he is by leading all of the way in the Galilee Final last start over 2400m at Caulfield and comes into this race with plenty of miles under the legs.
Luke Currie will be steering from barrier six.
