We are back to Caulfield on Saturday for another quality nine-race program, headlined by the Group 1 Underwood Stakes.
Russian Camelot is favourite for just about every race this spring and surprise! He’s a clear favourite to win the Underwood.
Underwood Stakes – Winner
No. 10 Russian Camelot – Bet Now: $1.95
He is clearly an outstanding racehorse and he only just missed in Group 1 company when resuming.
Russian Camelot really has enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence since making his debut at Ballarat less than a year ago.
He resumed in autumn for a somewhat forgettable further over 1400m at HQ, but smoked his rivals at Pakenham before winning the Group 1 SA Derby with complete ease.
He was a head second behind a good and fit one in Fierce Impact two weeks ago and the rise in trip he gets in this race is ideal.
If he’s anything close to his best, he’ll be winning.
Underwood Stakes – 2nd
No. 6 Mr Quickie – Bet Now: $7.50
Mr Quickie was also an impressive second in Group 1 company when resuming and going straight up to 1800m is ideal for him.
The Shamus Award gelding really just didn’t come up in the autumn this year, but there is no denying his top line ability when he puts it all together, and his resuming effort suggested that’s what he is doing this time.
He can slot in behind the early pace from the outside barrier and with even luck, he can be in the finish.
Underwood Stakes – 3rd
No. 9 Arcadia Queen – Bet Now: $4.80
Arcadia Queen has improved for two starts this time, and the Underwood Stakes is probably her best chance of a big performance and possible win in Group 1 company this time in.
The Perth-trained mare ran home well, but clearly needed the run when she finished fifth in the PB Lawrence Stakes first-up, and she was last seen finishing a close second behind Pretty Brazen in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes.
That horse has since come out and franked the form by running third in the Neds Sir Rupert Clarke last week, and this mare can go on with the job as well.
Underwood Stakes – 4th
No. 2 Humidor – Bet Now: $4.60
Humidor flew in from the clouds to win the Feehan Stakes at The Valley three weeks ago, and he is another horse that really should only be better third-up and out to the 1800m.
The Teofilo gelding has enjoyed a glittering racing career, bolstered by several Group 1 victories and that time he nearly beat Winx in a Cox Plate.
He went to Perth last prep and was literally a run away from retirement, which makes his last-start win even more incredible.
Willo jumps into the saddle, he’s drawn well and certainly has the class to be in the finish again.
