Tommy Berry picks up Gallo Nero ride as Schiller sidelined with spinal injury

Tommy Berry will take over as jockey for BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) favourite Gallo Nero, following a serious injury to Tyler Schiller.

Schiller suffered a fractured T8 vertebrae in a fall before the first race at Canterbury on Wednesday, landing heavily on his back after being dislodged from his mount.

He was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and later confirmed the injury on social media: “Fractured T8, out for six weeks.”

The setback rules him out for the rest of the Brisbane winter carnival.

Schiller was originally booked to ride $4.40 favourite Gallo Nero at Eagle Farm, but betting apps now list Berry as the replacement, with Hawkes Racing confirming the switch.

Berry also picks up the ride on Payline in the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m).

Fellow jockey Blake Shinn has also been ruled out for the rest of the carnival due to a foot injury.
