Treasurethe Moment defied the odds to claim victory in the ATC Australian Oaks after a gutsy performance, coming from behind in the final stages to defeat Sun ‘N’ Sand by a long neck.
The three-year-old filly, who was flat-footed when the leaders kicked off a slow tempo, rallied in the stretch and showed the courage that has made her the best of her generation.
At $1.55 favourite, Treasurethe Moment became the first filly since Serenade Rose in 2005-2006 to complete the VRC-ATC Australian Oaks double.
Trainer Matt Laurie, who also won the Vinery Stud Stakes and Sires’ Produce Stakes recently, was overwhelmed with emotion.
“I feel like I’m going to burst into tears,” Laurie said. “She really dug deep today to win that.”
Jockey Lane, who has had a stellar autumn with Group 1 wins in the Golden Slipper and Australian Derby, admitted to making the race tougher by underestimating the leader.
Laurie is considering a spring campaign for the filly, possibly targeting the Cox Plate, calling her the best filly in the country.
