Waller labels Australian Oaks a clash of the queens

Champion trainer Chris Waller has described the upcoming Australian Oaks as a “clash of the queens,” with two classic winners from opposite sides of the Tasman preparing for battle.

While Waller has chosen not to back up Aeliana from her stunning Australian Derby victory, he will have Leica Lucy and Belle Detelle, a close relative of Verry Elleegant, in the field.

The pair faces a tough challenge from Matt Laurie-trained Treasurethe Moment, who is undefeated in her last seven starts and the winner of the VRC Oaks. However, Waller believes Leica Lucy, who has won six of seven starts, is also a strong contender, making her debut for Waller after a victory in the New Zealand Oaks (2400m).

“It’s the New Zealand queen running against the Australian queen, without Aeliana. It’s a good race,” Waller said in his weekly video.

Treasurethe Moment is the heavy favourite for the 2400m feature, with Leica Lucy second in the betting at $5. Waller acknowledged that getting Leica Lucy to peak again after her long campaign would be a challenge.

“New Zealand is a little bit different. They don’t have a gap like we do,” Waller said. “We have done the best we can to keep her ticking over.”

Waller also reported that Belle Detelle, a three-quarter sister to Verry Elleegant, is in good shape following her win in the Adrian Knox Stakes and will be competitive in the Oaks.

Aeliana had been considered for the race but will be spelled and focused on the spring.
