Godolphin remains confident in Zardozi’s chances in the Sydney Cup, despite her untraditional preparation. The global powerhouse believes she has been racing like a genuine stayer.
While many competitors have had longer-distance runs leading up to the two-mile Sydney Cup, Zardozi comes off an Australian Cup placing over 2000m. Assistant trainer Darren Beadman feels Zardozi has already proven herself at the Sydney Cup distance, having placed fourth in the Melbourne Cup (3200m).
“She’s had the benefit of a run over the two miles in the Melbourne Cup and it was an outstanding performance to run fourth,” Beadman said. “We know she can run a good, strong two miles and if there is a bit of rain around that will certainly suit her. She’s a very tough mare.”
Cummings took a similar path with Zardozi in the spring, running her in the Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) before the Melbourne Cup. Zardozi has since had two prior starts in 2400m races.
She will be ridden by two-time Sydney Cup winner Kerrin McEvoy and has drawn barrier three. A strong field of 20 will contest the Sydney Cup (3200m), with Alalcance the favourite after a dominant win in the Chairman’s Handicap (2600m).
Caulfield Cup winner Duke De Sessa heads the weights with 56.5kg, looking to become only the third horse in 26 years to win with more than 56kg.
