Brad Widdup is hoping race experience and a favourable barrier can give Internal Affairs the edge in the Listed Inglis Nursery at Randwick.

The $440,000 yearling is the second most expensive runner in Saturday’s 1000m feature, behind debutant Vatican, a $1.2 million purchase.

Internal Affairs showed promise on debut last month, finishing fourth after working early from a wide gate.

Widdup considered turning him out but chose to continue after the colt thrived post-run.

“He has come through really well, so it was a bit of a no-brainer to go around,” Widdup said.

“It’s good prizemoney, not a big field. He has well and truly got enough ability.”

Drawn in barrier three, the colt should be handy, though Widdup wants Tom Sherry to find cover.

With six of the 11 runners first starters, he believes race experience could prove decisive.

“Unless you get something out of the box that is very good, race experience always helps,” he said.

Widdup also saddles Hyperbolic in the In Memory of Sam Kavanagh Handicap, confident she can continue progressing after a Rosehill win under Tommy Berry.
