Zahra impressed with Al Riffa ahead of Melbourne Cup tilt

Two-time Melbourne Cup winner Mark Zahra has given a glowing review of Al Riffa after partnering the stayer for the first time at Werribee.

Zahra, who claimed the Cup aboard Gold Trip in 2022 and Without A Fight in 2023, visited the quarantine centre on Wednesday to trial the Joseph O’Brien-trained entire ahead of the Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 4.

“I dare say if they didn’t own it, I would be on the horse,” Zahra said. “It’s good to have a bit of success with past Melbourne Cup winners and I’m very thankful to have the ride.”

The jockey said Al Riffa’s strength and temperament stood out. “He’s a big strong horse and the 59 (kilos) is no problem… his action was beautiful and when he needed to pick up, he picked up straight away.”

O’Brien, who has previously won the race with Rekindling and Twilight Payment, will chase a third Cup triumph.
