Agarwood Eyes Queensland Stakes After Debut Victory

Tulloch Lodge trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott are hopeful that Agarwood can follow in the footsteps of stablemate Clean Energy with a promising debut win at Warwick Farm.

The well-bred two-year-old filly claimed a dominant 2-1/2 length victory in Wednesday’s Schweppes Plate (1000m), a race Clean Energy won at the same meeting last year.

Clean Energy later went on to win the Listed Bill Carter Stakes (1200m) at Doomben, and Bott plans to chart a similar course for Agarwood.

“She (Clean Energy) went up to Queensland off the back of that and won a nice stakes race,” Bott explained. “That timing could work in with this filly. She’s got the ability to do so, we will look at the big picture and see where she fits in best.”

Agarwood, ridden by Tim Clark, started as the $2.40 favourite and surged to a strong finish to defeat Penpel ($13) and Sylph ($4.60).

Bott is considering the Listed Woodlands Stakes (1100m) at Scone next Saturday but is inclined to give her a break before her second start.

“We want to do the right thing by her because I think there is plenty of upside,” Bott said.

Meanwhile, Chris Waller is eyeing a winter carnival campaign for Regulated Affair, who impressed with a win in the opening race. Like Agarwood, the colt is by Wootton Bassett, and Waller is keen to race him in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on May 31.
