Frostnip Leads All the Way in Debut Victory at Caulfield

Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr’s debutant Frostnip impressed with a stunning win at Caulfield on Wednesday, showcasing her remarkable speed to lead from start to finish.

The two-year-old filly claimed victory in the MRC Foundation Gala May 8 Plate (1000m), despite being a little slow to begin under Blake Shinn.

Frostnip ($3.60) quickly recovered and crossed to lead, holding on for a half-length win over Sassy For Sure ($16). The $2.35 favourite, Wiltshire Square, finished third, a further three-quarters of a length away.

Price had given Shinn clear instructions to let the filly’s natural speed dictate the race.

“In his usual fashion, he shrugged his shoulders,” Price said. “If she jumps, we’ll go with her, if she doesn’t, and I have to ride a race, I’ll ride a race.”

Price believes Frostnip is a true sprinter and plans to keep her to shorter distances, targeting Black Type races during her two-year-old or early three-year-old season.

“I think if you had the right race for her, you could get some Black Type with her,” Price said, adding the Lightning Stakes in Adelaide could be a perfect fit.

Price also praised the filly’s connections for securing her at the Magic Millions Sale for $28,000, joking that her buyer, Stock and Station agent John Sutherland, might want to consider a career change.
