Dubai Goldrush takes late shot at Australian Oaks glory

When nominations for the Australian Oaks were first taken in February, Pam Gerard wasn’t considering a Sydney bid for Dubai Goldrush.

At the time, the New Zealand Oaks runner-up had yet to win a race. However, after a strong showing behind Leica Lucy in the New Zealand Oaks, Gerard decided to pay the late $22,000 entry fee and take a shot at the prestigious race.

“We thought she may have been more of a Brisbane type, but she improved so quickly,” Gerard said. “Leica Lucy is considered a superstar, and we thought we’d have a go at Sydney.”

Dubai Goldrush arrived in Sydney on Tuesday night and is priced at $17 for the race. Gerard believes her filly could have a chance to turn the tables on Leica Lucy, who is a $4.20 second favourite.

“Leica Lucy was very tough when she beat us, but whether she can bounce back and do it again, I’m not sure,” Gerard said.

Gerard is impressed by the favourite, Treasurethe Moment, but acknowledges the challenge ahead.

“Obviously, you’ve got some horrifically good ones here, so it’s pretty scary,” she said. “But if we can run a nice race, I’ll be happy.”
