Archibald hopeful Don Diego De Vega can turn the corner in Lord Mayors Cup

Don Diego De Vega is set to resume in the Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday, with co-trainer Rob Archibald confident the imported galloper can bounce back from a disappointing summer.

Previously a promising French performer, the five-year-old failed to fire in his last campaign, but Archibald believes firmer tracks may have been the issue.

“He has probably got the most x-factor of all our runners,” Archibald said.

“He’s a quirky horse, but he’s got a stack of ability… sometimes the Europeans just take that little bit of time to find their feet.”

Also representing the stable is Shahzad ($14), who won well on a heavy track last start but may find the 2000m trip a touch short.

“He is probably looking for that little bit further now,” Archibald noted.

Sir Chartwell, Mormona and Double Cherry complete the team, with most of the stable’s runners targeting the Winter Cup (2400m) on June 14.
