Godolphin secured its first Group 1 under a public training model as Beiwacht ($9) stormed to victory in the Golden Rose (1400m), breaking the track record in the process.
One of four Chris Waller-trained runners, Beiwacht rolled forward for Adam Hyeronimus and silenced doubts over the trip, racing clear to score by 4¼ lengths over stablemate Wodeton ($4.20). Favourite Tempted ($3), also in Godolphin’s colours, finished a close third.
Beiwacht’s winning time of 1:20.79 eclipsed Cepheus’ previous mark of 1:21.22. “Godolphin has been my biggest competitor for so many years in these stallion-making races … he is a proper racehorse,” Waller said.
The colt, by 2019 Golden Rose winner Bivouac, became Godolphin’s seventh winner of the race and their second in succession after Broadsiding.
With Godolphin yet to confirm its Everest runner, managing director Andy Makiv said Beiwacht and Tempted were the “logical choices” to fill the slot.
