Central Coast lifts late to earn Queensland black-type shot

Blueblood colt Central Coast is set for a stakes tilt in Queensland after overcoming trouble in running to win impressively at Canterbury on Wednesday.

The $1.4 million Wootton Bassett colt, out of champion mare Sunlight and raced by a Coolmore-led syndicate, delivered a narrow but classy victory in the Myplates Handicap (1250m).

Held up turning for home, jockey Adam Hyeronimus found clear air late as Central Coast surged past stablemate Crossbow ($19) to score by a long neck. Kokatahi ($13) was a similar margin away in third, giving trainer Chris Waller a trifecta.

“There is a Listed 1400 metre race in ten days in Queensland,” said assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth, who confirmed black-type is now the aim.

“He is part of a colts’ syndicate… if you can get black-type on the board as well it adds to his whole credentials.”

Hyeronimus, subbing in for an unwell Nash Rawiller, was impressed by the colt’s response under pressure.

“For him to accelerate the way he has… is really good,” he said.

Online bookmakers had Central Coast at $1.40.
