Two Group-performed colts from the Chris Waller stable will face important tests this weekend, but an untapped stablemate might steal the show.
Coleman, the former Victorian-trained three-year-old who finished runner-up in the 2024 Golden Slipper, will make his debut for Waller in the Victory Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
While he was a dual acceptor for the Hawkesbury Gold Rush (1100m), Coleman is set to head to Queensland by float on Wednesday evening.
In Sydney, Gatsby’s will attempt to bounce back in the Hawkesbury Guineas (1200m), following a form dip after a solid third-place finish in the Eskimo Prince Stakes.
“(Jockey) Nash (Rawiller) gave us a strong push to take the blinkers off and step him up in distance,” said Waller’s assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth.
Gatsby’s will go from 1200m to 1400m, with Duckworth hopeful the gear change will improve his performance.
Coleman, returning from a mixed spring campaign, placed in the Roman Consul Stakes and showed strong form in his two recent barrier trials. He will race with a nose roll for the first time this weekend.
“We’ve tinkered with his headgear a little bit, and he seems to relax better now,” Duckworth said.
Also resuming in Brisbane is Emirate, a lightly raced colt who won his first two starts before finishing fifth in both The Run To The Rose and Golden Rose last spring.
After the discovery of bone chips, Emirate’s campaign was delayed, but he will resume in a three-year-old race at Eagle Farm.
“He was one of our genuine top liners,” Duckworth said. “It was a toss-up whether James (McDonald) would ride him or Switzerland in a Coolmore.”
