Giga Kick claims third Group 1 crown in Champions Sprint thriller

Giga Kick has added another chapter to his stellar career, winning the Group 1 VRC Champions Sprint (1200m) at Flemington to become a Group 1 winner in three states.

The six-year-old, second-up from a dominant Schillaci Stakes (1100m) victory, produced a powerful late burst on a heavy track under jockey Mark Zahra to edge out Magic Time in what trainer Clayton Douglas called a “ding dong battle.”

Giga Kick ($5) prevailed by a head over Magic Time ($11), with favourite Joliestar ($2.70) 1-1/4 lengths away in third, after Tentyris was a late scratching at the gates.

“Happy days. He’s a champ this horse and I love him,” Douglas said. “He’s done so much for my career… it worked out perfect today.”

Douglas said the race had been a key target after injuries interrupted earlier campaigns.

Zahra, celebrating his eighth Cup week win, praised the gelding’s determination.

“It’s so good to see him back,” Zahra said. “His last 50 metres, he had a proper crack and got his head out at the right time.”
