Goldrush Guru set for SA Derby after solid Chairman’s Stakes run

Victoria Derby winner Goldrush Guru will get another shot at a Classic this week, with trainer Andrew Gluyas keen to back him up in the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) after a promising performance on Saturday.

The five-year-old finished fifth, beaten 2.5 lengths in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2000m) at $4.80, after over-racing early. Gluyas is hopeful a quick backup will help settle the horse’s temperament.

“We’ll monitor him through the week, our intention is to go to the Derby,” Gluyas said. “He’ll be better for that hit out today.”

Riding wide and over-racing, Goldrush Guru eventually took the lead, holding it until the final stages before being passed by Athanatos.

“He’s keen, and that’s been his problem this preparation… But that hit out might just season him for next week,” Gluyas explained.

After a strong third in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m), Goldrush Guru has struggled in his last two starts, but Gluyas remains confident the Chairman’s Stakes run will improve his chances in the Derby.

Goldrush Guru is now $13 for the South Australian Derby, with Statuario heading the market at $3.50. Lavalier, who finished second in the Chairman’s Stakes, is also a strong contender at $5.
