Heathcote confident veteran Rothfire and in-form Abounding can shine again

Trainer Robert Heathcote says evergreen sprinter Rothfire is thriving ahead of Saturday’s $3 million Russel Balding Stakes (1300m) at Randwick.

“He looks fantastic. In fact, I know it’s an old cliché and a lot of trainers say it, I think he looks better than what he did two weeks ago,” Heathcote said.

After his Sydney Stakes win on Everest day, Rothfire spent time at Euroa and Flemington, where master farrier John Bunting tended to his hooves.

“I’m unbelievably proud of him. With what this horse has gone through in his career… to succeed at this high level is quite extraordinary,” Heathcote said.

Facing six Everest runners including favourite Jimmysstar, Heathcote believes Rothfire can hold his own.

“He’ll be up on the speed somewhere… if Jason can time it right when the chips are down, he’ll be strong to the line.”

Heathcote also saddles up Abounding, a $10 chance in the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m).

“Drawing barrier one… it’ll help her get the 1600 metres,” he said. “She’s in super form.”
