Trainer Enver Jusufovic is optimistic about Pinstriped’s upcoming run in the Futurity Stakes, despite a disappointing first-up effort in the Group 1 C F Orr Stakes at Caulfield on February 8.
Pinstriped finished second-last in that race, but Jusufovic explained that the race did not unfold as expected, with many of the field sharing the same plan to follow Mr Brightside.
“From barrier 10, we all thought Mr Brightside would go forward and sit outside the leader,” Jusufovic said. “But Craig Williams, on Mr Brightside, was looking for something to take him forward.”
With Pinstriped lacking the early speed, Jusufovic instructed jockey Ben Allen to either track the three-wide line or go back to last. Pinstriped ultimately settled at the back, switching off before making little progress, finishing almost eight lengths behind the winner.
Despite the poor result, Jusufovic was encouraged by Pinstriped’s sectionals, which matched the third-place finishers.
“He’s come on from that run, so there’s no reason not to run him in the Futurity Stakes,” Jusufovic added, noting that the gelding is feeling great and has shown improvement since the Orr Stakes.
