Overpass aiming for a third win in The Quokka

Overpass looks to extend his remarkable record in Western Australia’s richest race, The Quokka, aiming for a third consecutive win in the $5 million 1200-metre feature at Ascot this Saturday.

With two wins in The Quokka and a pair of Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) victories at Ascot, Overpass has proven his class at the track.

This year, trainer Bjorn Baker has adjusted his strategy, opting for a second-up run after a near miss in the Group 1 T J Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 5.

“I’m looking forward to getting back over there,” said Baker, who is headed to Perth today. “It has become my second home at the back end of autumn and summer.”

Baker noted that Overpass has recovered well from his last race and is in great shape heading into The Quokka, staying with trainer Simon Miller in Perth.

Baker also highlighted how well Overpass suits the Ascot circuit. “He has a high cruising speed, so he can absorb pressure and travel well, which he’s done remarkably,” he said.

Overpass remains a top contender in the betting at $2.30, with Headwall at $6 and Front Page at $8.

“Headwall and Front Page are strong competitors, but I think Overpass is in great form,” said Baker.
