Machine Gun Gracie capped off a brilliant first racing preparation with another dominant win in the WATC Schweppes Derby (2400m) at Ascot, cementing her reputation as the top three-year-old in WA.
The filly outclassed the boys in similar fashion to her earlier victories in the Natasha Stakes and WA Oaks, making it a feature hat-trick in the prestigious race.
Debuting in February at Bunbury, Machine Gun Gracie went from strength to strength, claiming four wins and two second-place finishes in a stunning maiden campaign. The $45,000 yearling has earned over half a million dollars in prizemoney and bonuses.
Trainer Justine Erkelens, who selected the filly at Perth’s Magic Millions Sale, expressed her delight in the Group 2 WA Derby win, calling it her biggest thrill in racing. She now aims to target the Northerly Stakes and Perth Cup later this year.
“She’s a special horse and seems to do everything you ask of her,” Erkelens said. “Nothing fazes her, which is just incredible.”
Machine Gun Gracie, ridden by Shaun O’Donnell, won the WA Derby by 1 ¾ lengths, with Funchal and Sail Session finishing behind. O’Donnell claimed his second WA Derby, having previously won on Beaujolais Boy.
