Peter McGauran steps down as ATC chairman amid Rosehill fallout

Peter McGauran has resigned as chairman of the Australian Turf Club, ending his three-year tenure ahead of schedule.

Originally set to finish his term in January 2026, McGauran announced his early departure on Wednesday night, calling the decision a difficult one.

The move follows ATC members’ vote in May rejecting a proposed $5 billion sale of Rosehill racecourse — a plan McGauran strongly supported.

“I have made this decision aware of the challenges for the ATC ahead and believe that a new chairman and renewed focus will guide new initiatives for the club’s future and its members,” he said.

“I remain convinced the potential sale of Rosehill Gardens was a lost opportunity for the club and the wider racing industry.”

He thanked the 44 per cent who backed the proposal, adding, “I believe history will judge the decision to pursue the vision as having been the right one.”

McGauran highlighted achievements during his term, including a $570,000 operating surplus in 2023-24, a sell-out The Everest at Randwick, and improved safety measures for stable staff.
