Revelare set for 2400m test at Caulfield with eyes on bigger prize

In-form galloper Revelare will tackle his first staying trip at Caulfield this Saturday, stepping up to a 2400m handicap.

A winner of his last five starts, Revelare’s run of success began with a second-place finish at Seymour in December. Since then, the Robert Hickmott-trained horse has claimed wins at Sandown and Flemington, both over 2000m.

The 2400m race is part of Hickmott’s plan to potentially target the Listed Roy Higgins (2600m) at Flemington on March 29.

Hickmott, who trained for seven-time Melbourne Cup winner Lloyd Williams, follows Williams’ advice that a 2400m run is necessary before tackling longer distances at Flemington.

“All going well, he’ll go there,” Hickmott said of Saturday’s outing.

Ryan Hurdle, who has ridden Revelare in all six starts this campaign, may not be able to make the 56kg weight limit. If he can’t, Hickmott expects others to step in.

Victory in the Roy Higgins would provide a ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup in November.
