Clinton McDonald’s disappointment at seeing former stable star Angel Capital win the Chautauqua Stakes was soon replaced with joy as Rosberg claimed the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.
McDonald had guided Angel Capital to win last year’s McKenzie before the colt was sold to Yulong Stud and transferred to Chris Waller. But his new prospect Rosberg proved a worthy successor, starting $3.40 favourite and finishing a half-length clear of Stay Cosmic ($20), with Bacash ($5.50) third.
The trainer said Rosberg had shown rare talent at home, likening his brilliance to former stable champion Weekend Hussler. “He’s a really good colt… he does special things that the Hussler used to do at home,” McDonald said.
Rosberg is now being set for the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1100m) before the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).
Jockey Jamie Melham, deputising for her suspended husband Ben, called Rosberg “a weapon” and expects further improvement.
