Samangu defied a challenging run to take out The Mystic Journey (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday, securing her fifth win from seven starts.
The Grahame Begg-trained mare has been in top form since her campaign began last October, with Saturday’s victory marking her fifth from six well-spaced starts.
Ridden by Jordan Childs, Samangu ($2.90) defeated Roll On High ($17) by three-quarters of a length, with She Dances ($7.50) just a short half-head away in third.
Despite her strong performance, Begg revealed that Samangu would be heading for a spell.
“She’s been in work a long time, so she’s done a damn good job,” Begg said.
He noted that while Samangu has matured and overcome early challenges, her ability to sustain a full preparation has impressed the team. Begg also remarked on Samangu’s ability to adjust her race-day behavior, saying, “She’s starting to really put it all together.”
Begg acknowledged Samangu’s growth, especially after overcoming early maturity issues. Her future looks bright as she heads to the paddock for a break before returning next season as a more seasoned mare.
