Stefi Magnetica and Tom Kitten eye George Ryder Stakes challenge

Bjorn Baker is optimistic Stefi Magnetica can bounce back from a tough first-up run in the George Ryder Stakes, with a better draw offering a change of fortune.

The Stradbroke Handicap winner faced a wide draw in the Canterbury Stakes (1300m) and faded late to finish almost five lengths behind Royal Patronage. However, Baker felt the mare did well to avoid a bigger margin.

“She didn’t finish a whole way behind them,” Baker said. “She galloped well (on Tuesday) morning, and off her work, we definitely go in with a chance.”

Stefi Magnetica is yet to win beyond 1400m but has been competitive in features such as the Golden Eagle (1500m) and Champions Mile (1600m).

James Cummings has confirmed Tom Kitten will also run in the George Ryder after his victory in the All-Star Mile (1600m) at Flemington. Despite a tough draw, Cummings believes the backmarker is in good form for the challenge.

“He’s going to run a race,” Cummings said.
