Sunrise shines bright with Randwick win after record-breaking Kembla run

Connections of filly Sunrise are reaping the rewards of their patience after her impressive second-up win at Randwick, following a track record-breaking victory at Kembla Grange.

Trained by Mitchell Beer, Sunrise broke the 1000m course record on debut, earning a trip to town for the Midway Handicap (1100m). Ridden by Rachel King, the $1.80 favourite led the field and extended her advantage in the straight to win by 2-3/4 lengths, with Oakfield Badger ($8.50) in second and Everyone’s A Star ($5.50) third.

Originally from New Zealand, Sunrise was purchased for $45,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Broodmare Sale. Beer credited a full spring campaign for helping the filly learn to harness her speed.

“We knew how fast she was, but I said to the owners, ‘she’s not physically ready and not mentally ready’,” Beer said.

Sunrise, now unbeaten this campaign, could next aim for the Listed Denise’s Joy Stakes (1100m) at Scone next month.

Beer considered a black-type race in Queensland but opted for the Randwick assignment as a more logical next step. King praised Beer’s efforts in teaching Sunrise to settle, saying the filly came back beautifully mid-race, allowing her to power home.

“She feels like she will do better on a faster track. She is very genuine and very honest,” King said.
