Western Australia’s rising jockeys are gearing up to compete against the nation’s best in the 2025 National Apprentice Race Series (NARS), taking place in March and April. The series offers emerging talent a chance to test their skills on a national stage.
Leading the WA team this year is seasoned rider Luke Campbell, who is completing his apprenticeship, alongside returning team members Rosie Mahony and Zephen Johnston-Porter. Newcomer Chanel Cooper will make her NARS debut as part of the squad.
Last year, WA finished third in the series, just one point behind Northern Territory, and the team is determined to build on that success.
Racing WA Racing Training Manager Sharyn Lancaster emphasized the team’s depth of experience, noting that NARS offers invaluable exposure and growth opportunities for young riders.
“We’ve selected a strong team this year, and all but Chanel have competed in NARS before, so they’re familiar with the format. Chanel is highly skilled, and we’re confident she’ll perform well in the Northern Territory,” said Sharyn.
Last year, Johnston-Porter impressed with a treble in Tasmania after securing additional rides while competing.
Each NARS event consists of two races, with riders earning points for their teams. During the series, other WA apprentices will also compete in two races at Ascot.
Jockey Coach Peter Hall highlighted the importance of NARS for young riders, saying, “It provides invaluable experience and is a great way for apprentices to gain exposure on a national level, opening up pathways for their future careers.”
The WA leg of the series will take place at Ascot Racecourse on April 2, 2025.
