Wodeton’s Golden Slipper hopes hinge on Todman Stakes performance

Chris Waller remains calm about Wodeton’s preparation for the Golden Slipper, despite the pressure on the colt in the upcoming Todman Stakes.

The Coolmore-owned two-year-old is still a favourite for the Slipper, even after his third-place finish at Rosehill, where he was caught wide and positioned worse than midfield due to an outside draw.

While the result in the Silver Slipper (1100m) wasn’t ideal, Waller views the experience as valuable, turning the tough run into a positive.

“Whether he won or not, it was experience,” Waller said.

“He was exposed, he was three-deep, he was out of his comfort zone covering extra ground on a tight-turning track and that’s what you’ll get in a Slipper.

“It’s just about seasoning him for the Golden Slipper.”

Currently on the outskirts of the Slipper field, Wodeton must finish in the top two of the Todman Stakes (1200m) to secure a place.

Waller is realistic, saying a top performance is necessary to prove Wodeton’s Slipper credentials.

“If he doesn’t win or run second, he wouldn’t be going to a Golden Slipper,” he said.

“I’m not running him to qualify him. I’m running him to prepare him for the Golden Slipper.”

The Todman features a competitive field, including Beiwacht, North England, and Blue Diamond Stakes placegetters Tentyris and Tycoon Star, making their Sydney debuts.

Meanwhile, 12 fillies will contest the Reisling Stakes (1200m), led by Gimcrack Stakes winner Bel Merci and Godolphin’s Tempted.

The winners of both races will be exempt from the 2025 Golden Slipper ballot.
