Aaron Purcell eyes Warrnambool Cup and Brierly Steeplechase

Local trainer Aaron Purcell has added the Listed Wangoom Handicap to his list of Warrnambool Carnival victories, with Dashing taking out the feature sprint race.

Purcell now has three of the five major races at the three-day Carnival, alongside the Grand Annual Steeplechase and Galleywood Hurdle.

He now needs a Warrnambool Cup and Brierly Steeplechase to complete the set.

Despite Instigator’s past placings in the Brierly, Purcell won’t have a runner in Thursday’s Warrnambool Cup, so he’ll have to wait another year for a chance at the win.

A heavy downpour before the Wangoom race helped suit Dashing, with the gelding ($9) securing a half-length win over Fortunate Kiss ($6.50), with Dubai Poet ($18) finishing third.

Purcell explained that while the Wangoom wasn’t initially considered for Dashing’s campaign, the race became a logical option as his rating put him in a challenging spot for other races.

“He seemed to be going better than ever and the closer we got to the race, we thought why not have a go,” Purcell said.

Dashing has now won seven times from 34 starts, with 14 placings.

Purcell plans to step Dashing up in distance and is considering the Winter Championship, with the final held at Flemington in July.

“We’ll get him up in trip, and the Winter Championship is something we will definitely think about,” Purcell said.
