Befuddle set for The Showdown, with McGaw a strong backup

David Azzopardi will have mixed emotions on Saturday as he cheers for his runner Befuddle in the $1 million The Showdown at Caulfield.

Azzopardi, who operates Dream Thoroughbreds, is hoping for victory with John Sadler-trained Befuddle, but he’ll also keep an eye on rival McGaw, a horse he bred and sold.

“I’m supporting Befuddle because she’s in my colours, but if McGaw wins, I wouldn’t be too upset,” said Azzopardi.

Befuddle, a $15 chance, is expected to be on-pace in the 1200-metre event, while McGaw, trained by David and Emma-Lee Browne, will likely settle at the back. Azzopardi remains hopeful of a strong performance from both horses.

McGaw, by I Am Immortal, won impressively on debut and helped increase the value of his dam. Azzopardi sold McGaw for $14,000 at last year’s Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, and the gelding has already proven a valuable investment.

Befuddle, a daughter of Hanseatic, was purchased for $30,000 after failing to meet her reserve at auction. She secured her spot in The Showdown with a commanding win at Moonee Valley on February 28, and Jye McNeil retains the ride from barrier six.

“I think the race is winnable, but she can run top-three without a doubt,” Azzopardi said.
