Rachel King has had a remarkable year and is eager to continue her success on the final day of the Sydney autumn carnival.
In February, King made history as the first female jockey to win a Grade 1 race on the JRA circuit during a riding stint in Japan. Just last weekend, she added a stakes double at Randwick, riding Bjorn Baker’s Arapaho to victory in the Sydney Cup (3200m) and Nick Olive’s Spicy Lu in the Fernhill Mile (1600m).
“It was amazing to be over there (in Japan) and get those opportunities, then it’s also always nice to get back home and back into it,” King said.
King will team up with Spicy Lu again for the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday, with the filly aiming to maintain her unbeaten record after victories in the country and Listed Fernhill Mile. King believes Spicy Lu’s experience over the course and distance will be beneficial.
“She’s still learning how to use it, but she’s got a great attitude and that will help,” King said.
King will also partner Belclare in the All Aged Stakes (1400m), hoping the mare can bounce back to form after her return from New Zealand.
