Apprentice jockey Tom Prebble claimed the biggest triumph of his career, steering outsider Title Fighter to an impressive Stakes win at Flemington.
The success in Saturday’s Listed Straight Six (1200m) was just Prebble’s third appearance in Stakes-level racing, bringing his career win total to 110.
Tom, the son of champion jockey Brett Prebble and Maree Payne, began riding professionally in November 2022.
Despite starting as a $61 outsider, Title Fighter edged out Deekay ($21) by a short-head, while former Singapore star Lim’s Kosciuszko ($12) finished a neck back in third.
“This means a lot,” Prebble said.
“It was my first time on the horse. I thought the win was mine, but I didn’t want to go too soon and be smiling and cheering when I didn’t get the winner, so it’s pretty awesome now that I do realise I’ve won.”
Instead of celebrating immediately with his parents, Prebble quickly shifted focus to his next race commitments.
“I just see every race as the next and I just learn from them,” Prebble said.
Trainer Clayton Douglas praised Prebble for positioning Title Fighter perfectly from an outside barrier.
“He’s a quirky horse,” Douglas said.
“You have to get the first furlong right and then you’re right.”
Douglas revealed the stable had earlier rejected substantial offers from Hong Kong for the promising galloper, who has significantly improved this preparation.
“To be honest, I thought the owner was mad, but he’s won a Stakes race at Flemington,” Douglas said.
“It’s been a long, hard process to get him to switch off and now he’s got a few strings to his bow.”
