Veight’s career hits hurdle as stablemate Half Yours shines in Caloundra Cup

The McEvoy stable is navigating contrasting fortunes, with Group 1 winner Veight sidelined by a neck injury while emerging stayer Half Yours announced himself as a future contender.

Veight sustained a fractured vertebra in a paddock accident in Queensland two weeks ago.

It followed a tough run in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m), where he finished last on a heavy track.

“He pulled up a bit jarred up and sore from that terrible run at Doomben so we decided to give him more time off,” Tony McEvoy said.

“He had pneumonia after the Golden Eagle… then he took a fall or did something and broken a bone in his neck.”

The injury is expected to heal, with plans to return the four-year-old to Victoria next week.

Veight’s resume includes five wins and two placings from 12 starts, headlined by the 2024 George Ryder Stakes (1500m).

Meanwhile, Half Yours cruised to a dominant victory in the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) and is now rated a $26 shot for the Caulfield Cup.
