Trainer Grahame Begg is considering a unique path for Cilacap ahead of the Group 1 Australasian Oaks on April 26, potentially stepping away from the traditional route.
While the usual path to the Australasian Oaks is through races like the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill or the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) at Morphettville, Begg is contemplating a Group 3 race at Caulfield against older horses.
Cilacap has won three of her five starts, with her only blemish being a defeat in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1600m) at Flemington. She is entered for the Group 3 Alexandra Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday, leading up to a possible run in the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) at Caulfield on April 5.
Although the Easter Cup is not a typical race for three-year-olds, especially fillies, Begg believes it could be a good fit for Cilacap. He prefers the idea of only one trip to Adelaide for the Australasian Oaks.
“We’ll see how she goes on Saturday and be guided by that,” Begg said.
