Female jockeys are leading the charge in Brisbane’s metropolitan premiership, and Tony Gollan’s high praise for Emily Lang could be further cemented if she pilots Boomtown Boss to victory in the Queensland Guineas at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Lang has 52 city wins this season, many for Gollan, and holds a seven-win lead over her nearest rival, Angela Jones, and the absent James Orman, who is riding in Hong Kong.
With a background in academia, Lang’s qualification in data science and engineering offers a unique route to a career in racing, and it’s all coming together for her in the Group 2 feature for three-year-olds.
Gollan believes Boomtown Boss, the son of Spirit Of Boom, has a strong chance, despite still making some mistakes during his runs. He’s confident that if the horse can improve just a little more, the 1600m distance at Eagle Farm won’t be an issue.
The horse’s preparation couldn’t be better, with two wins in as many outings, including a victory in the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on April 19.
“I love the horse and rider combination with Emily,” Gollan said. “She knows the horse so well and I lose nothing by having her on.”
Boomtown Boss is currently $8 in all-in markets, with interstate raiders now targeting the Queensland carnival. Churchill’s Choice, Depth Of Character, and Shangri La Spring lead the market at $6. Gollan remains confident, despite the competition.
