Noonan reunites with Bold Soul for Flemington Cup test

Jake Noonan will be out to reward the Patrick and Michelle Payne stable’s loyalty when he reunites with Bold Soul in Saturday’s Deane Lester Flemington Cup 1849 (2800m).

The pair enjoyed stakes success together during Bold Soul’s three-year-old season, including a Tasmanian Derby win.

Since then, Noonan has only ridden the gelding twice, most recently finishing second to Goldenstatewarrior over 2600m at Flemington on July 5.

He had replaced Tom Prebble, who guided Bold Soul to victory at the same track two weeks earlier.

“I had a bit of luck on him and won the Tasmanian Derby,” Noonan said.

“He’s a tricky horse to ride, but I seem to have clicked with him, on occasions.”

Noonan believes a more level weight scenario would have seen him win last start and says settling early will be key over the longer trip.

“If he can do it right early, he can be pretty tough when he needs to be accountable,” he said.

“He’s seasoned and probably getting better with racing.”
